Meet Dr. Charles A. Buscema - Medical Director
Dr. Charles A. Buscema graduated from the six-year biomedical program, affiliated with the Albany Medical College of Union University in 1974. He graduated with a B.S. in Biology & a M.D. degree. He completed one year of psychiatric internship & three years of psychiatry residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital in 1978. Dr. Buscema then added a one-year Fellowship as Consultation Liaison of Psychiatry to complete his tenure.
A Distinguished Career
In 1980, Dr. Buscema was appointed the first Chief of Psychiatry at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York, a position that he held for nearly ten years. In 1983, he achieved board certification in the specialty of General Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology.
In 1995, Dr. Buscema graduated from a two-year Forensic Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Subsequently, in 1999, he was named Associate Director of the Forensic Residency. In June 2001 he was certified in the sub-specialty of Forensic Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Over the next ten years, Dr. Buscema held multiple senior medical posts within the New York Correctional System. Here, he leveraged his vast medical and forensic psychiatry experience. At the same time, Dr. Buscema authored and presented on numerous forensic and correctional topics. He is a published author with co-author Dr. William Glazer for the book Treating Schizophrenia in the Correctional Setting: The Forensic Algorithm Project 2002. This publication is still being utilized by state health care delivery systems throughout the country.

Upon relocating to Florida in 2007, Dr. Buscema held the post of Medical Director at New Horizons of the Treasure Coast until 2012. Over time, Dr. Buscema developed a private Suboxone doctor practice in Port St. Lucie which operates under the mandates of the Federal Suboxone Program for Opioid Dependence. He is also the Medical Director of SequelCare of Florida where he engages in the treatment of children, adolescents and adults in a general psychiatric setting. With the addition of Alternatives for You, Dr. Buscema remains actively committed to providing access to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) along with co-occurring disorders. Dr. Buscema is a member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Psychiatry & the Law (AAPL).
